Chaldean Volunteers Sought for Refugee Assistance

Michigan, USA - Sister Beth Murphy, the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator of the Refugee Services Office in the Archdiocese of Detroit is looking for two dedicated volunteers who can assist their staff with the important task of helping Iraqi refugees adjust to life in the United States.

Chaldeans are invited to this uplifting and rewarding opportunity of sharing their gift time and talent for the benefit of the hundreds of refugees who are arriving in the Detroit Metro Area.  The Office of Refugee Services has already resettled more than 700 refugees this year, improving the quality of life for many Chaldeans.  The office anticipates another 200 refugees by the end of this year.

The Archdiocese of Detroit is looking for fluent speakers in English and an office assistant to help with clerical work.  Both positions require less than a few hours a week.

Thank you for your interest in helping.  The following provide more details on how you can help.

ESL Assistant:
This is a wonderful opportunity for school teachers, foreign language learners, enthusiasts, or instructors.  A fluent English speaker is needed to assist ESL instructor with conversation groups in multi-level ESL class. 5-7 p.m. each Tuesday evening between today and Nov. 25, at St. Joseph Chaldean Parish in Troy, MI.

Many of the clients have excellent English reading skills but want to improve their ability to comprehend and communicate spoken English. This will be a rewarding experience for someone who enjoys meeting new and interesting people and a wonderful addition to any person’s resume or portfolio.  No previous experience necessary.

Office Assistant.
Are you talented in office management or business processes?  If you are comfortable using a copy machine, filing paperwork, and typing letters using Microsoft Word, we need your help.  An office assistant is needed to help out in an office, 7-10 hours a week, on a flexible schedule.

Join us one full work day a week (8:30-4:30, M-F) or choose your hours on 2 or 3 different days.  Our staff will train you to assist with the clerical tasks that are essential to the successful resettlement of the refugees we serve. We are a friendly and diverse group and would love to have you join us. One of the great perks? Delicious Iraqi and Vietnamese cuisine at the lunch hour!

These two positions will not require a Protecting God's Children Certificate, but that is recommended as well.

Even if you can't volunteer yourself, you can still help.. Please pass this information along to those you know who might be able to help.

If you are willing to help please e-mail info@chaldean.org your preference and contact information.
